Dr. Marvin E. Levin, one of our dear colleagues, passed away on Saturday, April 30th, 2016. Dr. Levin was born in Terra Haute, Indiana on August 11, 1924.

Marvin received his BA in 1947 and his MD in 1951, both from Washington University. He received his formal training at Barnes Hospital and Washington University where he most recently held the appointment of Professor of Clinical Medicine.

Dr. Levin was an expert in diabetes and its treatment, particularly in management of the diabetic foot.

An outstanding endocrinologist and teacher, Dr. Levin was an important part of the Washington University School of Medicine for decades through his interactions with faculty, fellows, residents, and students. Marvin retired from practice in 1989, but continued to contribute to the University through teaching and committee service. He attended in the Friday fellows’ continuity clinic for many years.

Dr. Levin was the recipient of numerous honors and awards. He was the author of more than 150 articles and chapters. His book, The Diabetic Foot, is the classic text in the field. He was a reviewer for many journals including Diabetes, Diabetes Care, and others.

Marvin Levin was a gem. He greeted you with a warm smile and often a silly joke. His professional, thoughtful, and compassionate demeanor made him a memorable teacher and elite clinician.

Our thoughts and prayers are with wife Barbara and his family.
