The inpatient diabetes management team at Barnes Jewish Hospital (BJH) and Washington University School of Medicine (WUSM) started in 2016 by Dr. Garry Tobin and Dr. Paulina Cruz Bravo with the help of the Barnes Jewish Foundation. We collaborate closely with BJH team members such as pharmacists, registered dietitians and certified diabetes care and education specialists. Mission

To provide expertise in inpatient glycemic management across a variety of specialties.  The objective of the service is to provide excellence in inpatient glycemic care, deploy scientifically based recommendations as they pertain to inpatient glucose-lowering therapies, and to assist in discharge planning in relation to diabetes care for the patient beyond the scope of the hospital.

Training The Next Generation

Our team also provides education to medical students, Internal Medicine residents, Endocrinology fellows and nurse practitioner students.

Our Work

To fulfill our mission, we work through several local and system committees: the inpatient diabetes management team subcommittee meets monthly to review sentinel events reported in our Electronic Reporting System, communicate updates to policies and procedures, plan education, and to identify opportunities for quality improvement. The glucose management team and its steering committee oversee the strategic planning of diabetes initiatives. Our benchmarks are the rates of severe hyper- (BG>-300 mg/dL) and severe hypo- (BG <- 40 mg/dL).
