On December 29, Natalia Genere, MD and Maria Papaleontiou, MD were invited by JAMA Network to share commentary on a recent study by Silver Karcioglu, published in “JAMA Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery.” The review was titled “Setting the Tone—Pretreatment Understanding Is Associated With Treatment-Related Expectations Among Thyroid Cancer Survivors.”

The study reported the findings of a cross-sectional survey of 1412 thyroid cancer survivors, asking participants of their “understanding of their treatment plan, whether treatments met their expectations, and their unmet needs relating to thyroid cancer care, using both multiple-choice and free-text questions.”

Genere and Papaleontiou state that the study by Silver Karcioglu offers qualitative insight to improving the overall health-related quality of life of patients who receive thyroid cancer care. Summarizing that it “highlights current unmet patient information needs in thyroid cancer care and emphasizes the long-term impact of pretreatment conversations in a patient’s thyroid cancer journey.”
