In May, Anne Carol Goldberg, MD, FACP, FAHA, MNLA and former fellow, Alexandra Martirossian, MD, had their invited review article titled “Management of patients with statin intolerance,” published in Best Practice & Research Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism.
Statins have become a cornerstone in the treatment and prevention of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, which is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality. Many patients stop using statins when they experience adverse muscle symptoms. “Although some statin-associated adverse muscle effects are real, some can be attributed to the nocebo effect, which is the patient’s perception of harm.”
In the article, the authors review statin safety in relation to muscles, its adverse effects and potential treatment strategies for patients who are statin intolerant.
