On May 15, Amy Riek, MD was featured in Washington University School of Medicine’s “Show Me the Science” podcast. The episode, titled “Making connections through storytelling” visited a campus event that brought together twelve faculty members, medical students, residents and fellows to share their personal experiences and stories during their time working in the medical field.
The inspiration behind the event was to bring the medical community together in a way to increase collective understanding of the similar and differing challenges they face. The organizers also hope to decrease the potential for burnout and aid in the further improvement of patient care.
In the podcast, Dr. Riek shares her personal experience of being diagnosed with breast cancer when she was pregnant with her second child, how she handled that experience and how it inspired a resonating compassion in the way she provides patient care.
