In honor of World Diabetes Day, the Diabetes Research Center of the Division of Endocrinology, Metabolism and Lipid Research sponsored the 2024 Diabetes Day Symposium. The event took place on Thursday, November 7 at the Washington University School of Medicine’s Eric P. Newman Education Center, with programming aimed at bringing together scientists and trainees to showcase their work, foster collaboration and to further awareness of diabetes research.
The event brought around fifty poster presenters, ranging from various departments and divisions, such as from Allergy and Immunology; Bone and Mineral Disease; Cardiology and Cardiovascular Diseases; Cell Biology and Physiology; Endocrinology, Metabolism and Lipid Research; Nephrology; Nutritional Science and Obesity Medicine; Pathology and Immunology; Pediatric Endocrinology; Physical Therapy; Psychiatry; and Radiology.

Later, the Diabetes Day Symposium welcomed guest keynote speaker Seung Kim, MD, PhD of Stanford University to give his talk titled, “Curative Intent: Strategies for Islet Replacement and Tolerance in Diabetes Mellitus.”
Dr. Kim is a KM Mulberry Professor; Professor of Developmental Biology, Medicine, and Pediatrics; Director of the Stanford Diabetes Research Center; and Director of the Breakthrough T1D Northern California Center of Excellence at Stanford. The Seung Kim Laboratory has discovered genes, signals and cell interactions governing development and function of pancreatic islets.
