Recently, Fumihiko Urano, MD, PhD joined “It Happened to Me” podcast hosts Cathy Gildenhorn and Beth Glassman to discuss Wolfram syndrome and his ongoing research. Dr. Urano is the director of the Wolfram Syndrome International Registry & Clinical Study and the doctor of Cathy, who has a variant of the disease.
Wolfram syndrome is an inherited condition that commonly manifests itself in the form of diabetes mellitus, optic nerve atrophy, central diabetes insipidus, sensorineural deafness, urinary tract problems and progressive neurologic difficulties.
Throughout the podcast episode, he discusses further how Wolfram syndrome presents itself in patients and how the disease progresses over time. In addition, he goes in-depth about his journey in searching for a cure and where he’s at now in his research.
